Image for French kiss pic is a global hit

French kiss pic is a globalhit

Concerned citizens of the French city of Marseille sternly rallied against a bill which would allow adoption by same-sex couples – but it’s this image, snapped by an AFP photographer, which is resonating with a huge and instant global audience.

Photographer Gérard Julien’s image of two young women kissing in front of the angry demonstrators has now been seen by hundreds of thousands of people sharing the photo on social networks around the world.

The rallies were taking place in 75 centres around France, organised by a group which also opposes abortion and marriage equality. A big pink banner read: “one father, one mother – we don’t lie to children.”

The two women in the photo told French gay magazine TÊTU that they’re both straight, but wanted to make an important point.

“I think we do not need to be gay to be supportive,” says kisser Julia. “It’s a gesture of solidarity, pure and simple. I am for what the protesters do not want.

“While we were kissing, [the protestors] were screaming, ‘You’re disgusting! You are not beautiful!’”

Taking the photo, Julien knew he’d captured an iconic moment. “I had an inkling that the picture – which touches on an issue that leaves few indifferent – would resonate across a large audience,” he wrote on his AFP blog. “But I confess that I had no idea just how much attention it would draw.

“Who knows, it could turn out to be the kind of image that only comes along once in a while in the career of a photographer.”

Wow thats is so amazing... So straight people do actually support us sometimes... I do not think that if they were gay it would be such an important pic (Not because I hate gays.. no no no) It wouldn't have had such an impact as the people would choose to ignore it.

What a backhanded compliment!

If two straight girls kiss to piss off protestors than then pic is a hit. But if two girls kiss each other because they actually love each other then that isn't as meaningful.

Quite frankly I don't like is double standard where straight girls can kiss each other and it's "hot" or a great publicity stunt, or done to up the ratings on some tv show.

But 2 straight men would never be caught kissing each other. And if they did, it would cause outrage to the point where the tv show would be screened with a warning at the beginning that there are adult themes.

Straight girls kissing each other is so 2002.

Let's stop praising straight people for using our sexuality and struggles for their entertainment....

Um did you read the article?...

'The two women in the photo told French gay magazine TÊTU that they’re both straight, but wanted to make an important point.

The article is not about "Straight girls kissing each other is so 2002." it's about heterosexuals showing us support. They see ignorant people refusing to acknowedge fellow human beings in the year 2012.

They did what they did to show these people that there are a lot of heterosexual supporters of gay rights.

JayTee has a point and on the whole I agree with what he said. But what these two girls did does not hurt our struggle for equality in any way. It does make light of it a little maybe and it might make them famous for a day on our backs. It is a brilliant publicity stunt if they are aspiring models or actors. Gets them in front of the camera and then they are quick to set the record straight and make it clear they are not gay. You can actually see them giggling while kissing. Lesbian women don't kiss that way. Straight girls can never pull off being lesbians, bless 'em.

^ I agree Sue...

A friend of mine once pointed ot that the more attracted two people are, the closer their hips are as they kiss. The one on the right looks like she's about to topple over! Awks!!

Yes i read the article. Otherwise how would I know that they were 2 straight girls kissing?

I do wonder why their straight boyfriends didn't also passionately kiss each other to show their support......

Hint hint: it's called a "double standard". Two straight girls kissing in protest makes for a great photo in newspapers. 2 men kissing (whether they be gay or straight) not so much.......

BOO

I knew instantly when i saw the picture this was coming;

The two women in the photo told French gay magazine TÊTU that they’re both straight, but wanted to make an important point.

“I think we do not need to be gay to be supportive,” says kisser Julia. “It’s a gesture of solidarity, pure and simple. I am for what the protesters do not want.

but i was so hoping i was wrong because it is photographically excellent. but i wasn't of course.

that must be why Sue and Bar Wench.

it's just not a real kiss. it's asexual. i would have thought that would be obvious to everyone. is it only obvious to lesbians?

I don't think this is cool. I'm pretty sure if this was an anti interracial marriage rally and two people of the same race showed up (especially if they were 'white') and put on some skin makeup and kissed like this, it wouldn't be a 'global hit'. I'm pretty sure they would be torn to pieces on the internet actually (which I also wouldn't think was ok, as I believe an action is at least half the intention behind it).

homosexuality is only ok when it is asexual and non-threatening or titillating and non-threatening.
