Anal Sex OK In Singapore - For Straights Only
A bill introduced into Singapore’s parliament on Tuesday will seek to legalise oral and anal sex between heterosexual couples, leaving the practice still considered illegal when conducted by gays.
Singapore is renowned for its draconian laws, many of which are left-overs from the rule of the British Empire, having been colonised in the 17th century.
The charge of gay sex is deemed “gross indecency” in the Singaporean political and legal spheres; although, no one has been charged with the offence for a number of years. It’s possible that this piece of legislation is a stepping stone in the country viewing sexuality as a whole with less reactionary laws in the future.
In a sign of hope, former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, who ruled from ‘59 to ‘90, said in an interview that: “If in fact it is true, and I have asked doctors this, that you are genetically born a homosexual – because that’s the nature of the genetic random transmission of genes you can’t help it. So why should we criminalise it?”
Mr Yew is still considered an influencial figure in the Asian city-state of 4.5 million, where a gay scene does exist despite the apparent severity of its laws.
