New NY Club Kid Doco Premieres at CMJ Fest.
First there was the almost-true story of Michael Alig and his club kids in Party Monster (see YouTube clip below); now an updated view with New York’s current clubs kids can be seen in the documentary Motherfucker: A Movie, which premieres at the CMJ Festival in New York this week.
Director David Casey started out wanting to make a film that documented the moment that the rock music of The Strokes, Interpol etc reclaimed the music scene back in 2000.
Instead, what he ended up with was Michael T, Johnny T, Georgie Seville, Justine D – the faces of Motherfucker, a full blown party where people dress outrageously and party hard, happening in New York City since 2002.
Casey has documented the scene and its dance, drugs and drag queens, and tried to capture a real life moment that in fact can’t actually be captured unless you’re actually there.
He conducted 152 interviews and shot over 200 hours of footage in the seven months between NYE 05/06 and June 2006.
“I wanted to talk to everybody I could about the changing landscape of nightlife in New York: Moby, Andrew W.K., Tommie Sunshine, Tricia Romano, etc,” Casey told NY’s Village Voice. “They had to be done quick, because with documents of nightlife, you either want immediate or 20 years down the road. You know, look what you could be doing now — or look at what you missed.”
“If it’s going to be a slice of life in 2006, then that’s what it is,” he says.
