HIV Research Breakthrough?
There have been further breakthroughs in HIV research. Scientists in Germany have discovered a protein in semen that attaches to particles of the virus, which essentially delivers it to cells in the body, dramatically increasing the risk of infection.
They say that this protein increases the infection rate 100,000 fold and now that they’ve found it, they’re hoping it will provide a new way to fight HIV.
Initially scientists were looking at semen to find elements that might block the virus, but they never expected to find the complete opposite.
Frank Kirchhoff, one of the researchers from the University Clinic of Ulm said, “We were not expecting to find an enhancer and we were even more surprised about the strength.”
More than 90% of people living with HIV contract the virus through sex. Now with this information in mind, researchers are hoping that compounds can be developed to block the actions of the protein.
