Benazir's Boozer
Ah, the perils of Facebook. When it comes to completely saying goodbye to your privacy, Facebook has it down pat. We’ve heard the stories of people losing their jobs because Facebook has caught them out chucking sickies – now the son of recently assassinated Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto is starting to realise the importance of holding onto a bit of mystery.
19 year old Bilawal Bhutto Zardari resides in the UK – he’s a student of Christ Church College in Oxford – and it seems that he’s making the most out of not being under oppressive Pakistani law. His Facebook profile reveals that he’s best buds with a lesbian couple, despite gay relationships being illegal in his home country, where he was recently been named chairman of his mother’s Pakistan Peoples Party. Lesbians face 100 lashes each if caught in Pakistan.
According to UK’s Daily Mail, his profile also talks about him being constantly hungover, even though under Islamic law alcohol is totally banned.
Posts on a friend’s wall also reveal a concerning attitude to his mother’s assassination. One said: “There is a void in my life now, it’s a deep dark hole in my (soul)... that can only be filled with… boozie suzie!!” In another post he says that he now intends to show up to his classes hungover with his work incomplete.
While Facebook have closed some fake profiles claiming to be Bhutto, this one has been deemed to be the genuine article. His behaviour may be no different to that of any other UK teenage student, but it’s not going to be regarded in such a light in his home country.
It’s no surprise that Zardari has told his family that he’s not ready to take replace his late mother at the heart of Pakistani politics. He’s asked for them to lower their expectations of him and it’s working – his father has said that he’s too young to take power.
