This Weekend - A Time To Remember
There’s a lot to be mindful of this weekend.
Holocaust Memorial Day is this weekend on Sunday 27 January. Ironically it’s the day after Australia Day, a day known to many, particularly Indigenous communities, as Invasion Day, a day that marks the genocide that took place on our shores.
In London a Holocaust memorial ceremony will be held in Westminster where gay people killed by the Nazis will be among those remembered. The theme of the ceremony is “Imagine, Remember, Reflect, React” and there will be variety of dramatic, video based and sung performances throughout the evening. The rationale behind the event is to highlight the issues of racism, homophobia and sexism.
According to Pinknews.co.uk, between 5,000 and 15,000 gay men were kept in concentration camps by the Nazis. It’s estimated that 60% of them died while they were imprisoned. After the war gay men weren’t considered victims of the Holocaust and many were actually put back in prison because they were gay. They were also denied compensation and welfare that was made available to others.
In Sydney, Indigenous communities will celebrate their survival with Yabun, which is an annual event held on January 26 from 10am in Victoria Park, on the corner of City Road and Broadway, Camperdown.
Yabun showcases the best of Indigenous music and performance, with arts and crafts, and information stalls to educate the Indigenous and wider community.
And of course, there’s the anti-violence vigil taking place in Sydney in Harmony Park, Surry Hills from 4pm this Saturday.
