Bounty Killer Concerts Killed

Gay rights groups in the UK are feeling chuffed at the moment. They’ve just managed to cause the cancellation of two out of three concerts from Jamaican reggae singer Bounty Killer, whose music calls for gay people to be burned, drowned, stoned, wiped out and killed.

Charming.

The Birmingham and Bradford concerts will no longer go ahead, but his gig in London will. According to 365gay.com, British gay rights group Outrage has been trying for four years to keep this kind of music out of the UK.

His track Man A Badman is a great example of the homophobic lyrics – it contains the line, “You know we need no promo to rub out dem homo.”

Hate speech like this is an offense in the UK but it’s hard to prosecute because the line between illegal activity and free speech is often blurred. Outrage are unimpressed that London police didn’t feel the need to ban the concert.

“A white singer who called for the killing of black people would be banned from performing,” said activist Peter Tatchell.

“A similar ban should also apply to singers who incite the murder of gays and lesbians. Incitement to violence and murder is a criminal offence in every country in the world. We want the law enforced.”

Bounty Killer had better rethink his lyrics if he wants to make any money when touring around Europe. A concert in Germany has been canned, and now other German dates are in jeopardy. Gay rights groups in Europe are doing their best to unite on this front as he tries to take his tour to the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland.
