Conservatives Can 'Kiss It'
American TV production company Procter & Gamble have received denigrations from the conservative group American Family Association for airing a kiss between a homosexual couple on their daytime soap opera As The World Turns. Having received criticisms from many followers for not allowing the two men to kiss since September of last year, the show’s producers finally allowed them to do so again on April 23.
American Family Association founder and chairman Donald Wildmon sent a mass e-mail to the organisation’s members with the subject title, “Procter & Gamble promotes explicit open-mouth homosexual kissing,” asking its followers to barrage the company with complaints. The e-mail also included a YouTube video which features the kiss. “Warning,” his e-mail said. “Content is repulsive.”
After being in the bottom half of eight daytime soaps in ratings in the past year, As The World Turns has climbed to the No. 3 or 4 spots in recent weeks.
In response to the complaint, a Procter & Gamble spokeswoman said that the company “values diversity”.
“We strive to be a responsible advertiser, sponsoring programming that enable us to connect with a diverse consumer base,” she said in an e-mail. “The story of Luke and Noah on As The World Turns is intended to be an authentic reflection of what’s happening in society today. We recognise that there are times when the subject matter of P&G sponsors will not be acceptable to all people as we strive to reach a very diverse group of consumers.”
