Kylie's Tour Kicks Off In Paris
Well she may not be a hit in America, but Kylie’s just been awarded one of France’s highest cultural honours – the Order Of Arts and Letters. It’s nice timing too – she’s just kicked off her KylieX2008 tour in Paris.
According to France’s culture minister Christine Albanel, Kylie has the Midas touch of the international music scene – “everything she touches into gold”. Albanel went on to say, “I want to publicly salute the courage you showed by revealing publicly that you had cancer. Doctors now even go as far as saying there is a ‘Kylie effect’ that encourages young women to have regular checks.”
The Order of Arts and Letters recognises artists and writers who have made significant contributions to the arts in France and internationally. Other recipients of the award include Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Meryl Streep, Clint Eastwood and Uma Thurman.
Kylie accepted the award, calling it an enormous honour and adding that she had fallen in love with France, the country she chose to call home after she was diagnosed with cancer.
“I feel so grateful that I have had so many moments in my life that I have experienced and loved that are thanks to this country and the people here,” she said.
Meanwhile KylieX2008 premiered in Paris on Tuesday night and so far the show has been getting positive reviews. On this tour the stage is quite flat, vast and open. There’s no staircase or catwalk. The floor itself lights up and behind it are towering video curtains.
Kylie entered dangling within an enormous gold hoop to the track Speakerphone.
It seems like William Baker has been working overtime to make sure the homoeroticism is front and centre in this show. During Heartbeat Rock the stage is bedecked in stars and stripes and Kylie’s dancers are dressed as American footballers. During In My Arms she is flanked by what one reviewer called “a shaven-headed muscular army of male couples”. Hot.
The show also promises a dramatic aerial display as well as some new songs too, including the ballad Flower and the little known track Sometime Samurai, during which she emerges in a Japanese Kimono beneath a shower of petals.
