Water Polo Porn Scandal
Two men who allegedly took photos of high school water polo players and then posted them on gay porno sites will not face criminal charges. Prosecutors in Orange County, California say that they’ve tried all they can, but according to the letter of the law the men haven’t actually done anything illegal.
The photos of the boys playing water polo made their way onto at least five pornographic sites. While the images of the players weren’t graphic themselves, placing them next to shots of naked men was enough of a juxtaposition to create concern. Some of the players in the shots are as young as 14.
The photos of the boys were taken at University of California water polo meets and as they were public sporting events the photographer may be protected by the First Amendment of the US Constitution which defends free speech.
Apparently some of the boys in the photos are so traumatised by the incident that they’re undergoing counselling.
“We deplore the actions of individuals that have gone against the nature in which our sporting events are intended,” said a spokesperson for USA Water Polo.
“We’ve continued to take some steps to be more vigilant and police the pool deck,” said the Water Polo Coach from Newport Harbor High School. “We’ve designated some of our… parents to be more vigilant of people who come with cameras. It’s still hard with little tiny cameras and cellphones, but at least we’re trying to do something.”
