New Embryonic Laws For UK
MPs in the UK have voted in favour of amending the current human embryology laws, despite there being opposition from religious MPs – it came down to 340 yes votes against only 78 no.
According to Pinknews.co.uk, the changes mean equality for lesbians when accessing fertility treatments. It also means animal-human embryos can be created in the name of research. In addition, women can seek IVF without needing to prove to doctors that there will be a father in the child’s life. This has been replaced with a need for “supportive parenting.”
Some MPs really spoke up about being opposed to the move. One described the bill as “one of the most ill-conceived measures to be put before this House”. Recently the leader of Scotland’s Roman Catholics, Cardinal Keith O’Brien, referred to the bill as “Frankenstein-like”. The Church say that this bill goes against standards that we’ve been living by for the past 2,000 years and that it robs children of biological fathers and tampers with birth certificates.
The government affirms that because of the legal recognition of civil partnerships and laws preventing discrimination on the grounds of gender and sexual orientation, any other move would have been inconsistent.
