Larry Craig Digs Deeper Hole
Remember Larry Craig? He’s the US Senator from Idaho who got busted by an undercover cop soliciting sex in a public toilet. Of course he denied it, not that the Senate Ethics Committee – or anyone else for that matter – were at all convinced.
In a press conference in August 2007 Craig told media, “I am not gay. I never have been gay… In June, I overreacted and made a poor decision. I chose to plead guilty to a lesser charge in hopes of making it go away… Please let me apologise to my family, friends and staff and fellow Idahoans for the cloud placed over Idaho. I did nothing wrong at the Minneapolis airport. I did nothing wrong, and I regret the decision to plead guilty and the sadness that decision has brought on my wife, on my family, friends, staff and fellow Idahoans.”
The Senate Committee reported that Craig had spent $223,000 of campaign funds on public relations around the scandal. Now he’s throwing more money at the cause – he plans to write a book about it. Sorry, but methinks the lady doth protest too much.
This week, during a live TV interview, Craig, who is married with three children, talked about the book, which is expected to hit shelves early next year. “I think that’s important for Idaho and those outside Idaho who are interested to know.”
There’s been little sympathy for Craig from the gay community, given that he’s always gone out of his way to stand in the way of gay rights, often telling media, “I don’t approve of the lifestyle.”
