Gay Superhero Coming To TV
The closet seems to be The Chronicles of Narnia’s executive producer Perry Moore’s favourite magic portal for any story. The Pevensie siblings had to go through one to go to Narnia, and Moore’s gay teen superhero Thom Creed can’t get out of another.
Perry Moore, 36, the author of the novel Hero, is working with comics king Stan Lee – creator of some of the most successful stories such as X-Men and Spiderman – to bring America’s first mutant gay teen to TV, and possibly to the big screens too.
Hero tells the story of Thom Creed, a teenager who has the superpower of healing. In addition to the usual teenage angst, Thom is craving acceptance from his father – whose opinion on gays isn’t quite clear – and, as a typical mutant, from himself.
If in X-Men we have mutation as a veiled analogy to examine so called minority groups, in Moore’s story the drama is multiplied – although there’s a slim chance that his father may accept Thom as gay, he’s a declared mutants hater.
The book has been a big hit ever since it was released in 2007, and it looks like Lee is already a confessed fan of Moore’s work. Lee is quoted on the cover of the new editions, saying that it’s totally original and an amazing and unforgettable experience.
As it was created by a gay person mostly for gay people of all ages, we shouldn’t expect stereotypical gay character traits in the series, but a darker, mysterious scenario – more like Lost and less like Charlie And The Chocolate Factory – Hollywood’s vision of the gay world.
“It’s not campy either – it’s not The Gayest American Hero. He just happens to be gay. It’s just one of the many things he wrestles with,” Moore told New York Magazine. There are a couple of TV networks that are interested in the series, but it hasn’t been announced which channel they will go with yet. This should be happening soon.
