Jason Donovan Plays G-A-Y

Jason Donovan is a brave man. The star of the West End production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and more recently the UK reality TV show I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here! took to the stage at London’s G-A-Y Astoria club on the weekend.

No biggie you say? Well, on the surface maybe not, but it does mark yet another chapter in Jason Donovan’s love-hate relationship with the gays. Back in 1992 he sued The Face magazine for calling him gay. He might have won the case, but he lost the support of the gay community, and as such his then successful recording career sank like a stone, while Kylie’s continued to skyrocket.

Then in 1996 when he appeared at G-A-Y Astoria to help judge the Mr Gay UK contest, he was hoping people would have forgiven and forgotten. Not so. He was jeered by the 2,500 strong audience. Then, as if that wasn’t bad enough, he went and turned down a role in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, because he “didn’t like the script.” Ahem.

So you can see why Jason’s not wasting any of his second chance in the gay spotlight. Now that he’s a reality TV star he’s hoping to regain his title of Teen Idol by re-releasing his most successful hit, Too Many Broken Hearts. It comes out later this month, hence the performance at G-A-Y. As for how well it will sell, that remains to be seen. Most teens who grew up to his music are heading towards their thirties now.
