Gay Marriages Begin In California
The wedding bells are ringing across California as gay couples make use of their shiny, new marriage legislation. The first gay couple allowed to marry was Robin Tyler and Diane Olson. The brides wore matching ivory suits and have decided to keep their own surnames.
Ordinarily registrars and county clerks would close up shop at 5pm, however as the new legislation came into effect from 5pm on Monday they decided to stay open late to get started on the ceremonies.
Tyler and Olson got their license at 5:01 p.m. on Monday June 16. Because they were the original plaintiffs in the 2004 California lawsuit that challenged the gay marriage ban, they were allowed to get their license first “in recognition of their unique role in the court’s decision,” said acting L.A. County Registrar-Recorder Dean Logan.
As they entered the courthouse in Beverly Hills, LA they told the media swarm, “We just love each other!”
Of course there was opposition, which is to be expected when anyone is doing anything ground breaking. Some people in the crowd held up homophobic banners saying things like “Homo Sex Is Sin!”
As they left the courthouse they held their marriage license high and proud, as the wedding march played. They then stood before a rabbi who completed their ceremony. Someone from the crowd screamed out “Jesus Loves You!”
The rabbi then declared the two married and was barely halfway through the sentence “By the power vested in me by the state of California I now pronounce you spouses for life!” when the proud roar of the crowd drowned him out.
Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin were the first gay couple to wed in San Francisco, less than ten minutes later at 5.10pm. Both women, now in their eighties, emerged from City Hall to a crowd of about 1,000 people. Some cheered and some booed. One held up a sign saying “Homo Sex Is a Threat to National Security.”
Yesterday was the first full day of gay marriage in California. Hundreds of couples tied the knot in ceremonies across the state.
