Boy George Locked Out Of USA
You gotta hand it to Boy George – the man has a sense of humour. Earlier this month he announced that he’d be doing a free show in August for workers at New York City’s Department of Sanitation. He swept the streets with them in 2005 as part of his punishment for cocaine possession.
“The people I worked alongside showed great kindness to me at a very difficult time, and I wanted to thank them all in a way that would show my appreciation.”
The show is to slot in as part of his summer tour of shows around America. Or rather, it was. While George may be able to laugh off unsavoury moments from the past, officials at US Customs are not amused. They have denied him a visa to enter the country.
“I’m pretty devastated because I am so excited about this forthcoming tour and having my visa application denied seems unfair after I swept the streets of New York spotless,” he said to Paper magazine. “There are a number of public figures who are openly using drugs and they have no problem with immigration and I have seriously turned my life around and I feel great right now and this is just another reminder of how bad things were. I committed a crime and I happily paid the consequences and I should be allowed to move on and get on with what I do best and that is performing and making people people dance and cry!”
It’s an even bigger slap in the face, given that George has recently written a song called Yes We Can, dedicated to Barack Obama.
