Barack Is Back
While some commentators think she’s Barack’s ‘softer side on display’, whether that’s true or not, Michelle Obama insists both her and her husband are pro-gay rights. But is this more political rhetoric from the Obama camp?
As Barack looks set to contest the presidential election against right-wing Republican John McCain, Obama’s campaign has been pushing his wife as the ‘girlfriend and hardworking mom’.
A Harvard trained lawyer, Michelle Obama is anything but a stay-at-home housewife. Speaking to the Democrat’s Gay & Lesbian Leadership Council conference in New York on Thursday evening she said, “We are all only here because of those who marched and bled and died, from Selma to Stonewall, in the pursuit of a more perfect union. The world as it is should be one that rejects discrimination of all kinds.”
And it seems Obama’s gay supporters believe her. The conference and its attendees raised $1.3 million for the Democrat campaign. A relatively small addition to a campaign that is estimated to fundraise $1 million a day, on average.
Reports stated that in addressing the group, Michelle set her husband apart from any other Democratic politian and any other presidential nominee.
In the wake of hundreds of same-sex marriages taking place in California, Obama’s Republican rival McCain has proposed an anti-gay marriage amendment for the western state.
“A world that recognises that equality in relationship, family, and adoption rights is not some abstract principle,” she declared, “it’s about whether millions of LGBT Americans can finally live lives marked by dignity and freedom.”
Obama’s campaign has recently been criticised for its lack of overt commitment to gay-rights, particularly to that of same-sex marriage and civil unions. Michelle Obama appears to have rejuvinated Barack’s standing amongst LGBTI Americans.
Seemingly addressing the gay-communities previous concerns Michelle Obama said “It’s not just about the positions you take, it’s also about the leadership you provide.”
