It's Noice, It's Different, It's Unusual... Or Is It?

Will American television make our Kath & Kim even noicer? Well, that’s how they’re pitching it in promos for an October 9 release. “Four years ago NBC turned the British hit The Office into an American classic… and this fall, we’re doing it again.”

But while NBC appears optimistically confident, television critics and influential US media group Horizon Media are less so. Responsible for analysing the new shows for the northern hemisphere’s autumn season, Horizon has predicted the American version of the Australian hit to be one of the first of the season to fail.

The duo that started it all, Gina Riley and Jane Turner, are co-executive producers on the US version. But there’s no aussie accent in ear-shot in this version, but maybe that’s a good thing, instead of impersonation, it’s all American twang.

“We’re middle-class, celebrity-obsessed, tabloid-crazy and kind of superficial,” says Selma Blair, of Cruel Intentions fame, playing Kim in the upcoming series. “We think we are so fabulous and we’re not really, at all. My mum Kath is wonderful and perky and positive and I’m a complete downer.”

One of the promos currently airing shows off the witty, or not-so-witty, repartee we can expect from the show.

“My marriage is over!” says Kim
“O. V. U. R.”

NBC has been said to have invested heavily in the show, and while critics think our girls will be back in Fountain Lakes in no time, the network has ordered 13 episodes. An investment thought by some to be slightly reckless for a new show in the US.
