George Michael: "I Did It On Purpose"

Apparently George Michael’s casual sex in a Hollywood public toilet wasn’t just reckless, it was deliberate. At least that’s what the pop star has said in a recent interview.

Indicating it was a ‘relief’ to be ‘caught’ and to be forced to ‘come out’, Michael said the situation that received enormous media coverage ten years ago, was actually a good thing.

Charged with lewd conduct and fined $810 in 1998, Michael had talked about the incident previously with MTV.

“I got followed into the restroom and then this cop – I didn’t know it was a cop, obviously – he started playing this game, which I think is called, ‘I’ll show you mine, you show me yours, and then when you show me yours, I’m going to nick you.’”

Michael has come out again today, to say that the incident was linked to a chronic bout of depression due to drug use, and ultimately to the loss of his partner Anselmo Feleppa to AIDS.

“It was a very eventful and bizarrely dark period for me that I thought was going to go on forever. It was a huge relief and it took me about a year to admit to myself that I had done it, deliberately.

“The truth is, cruising has gone on for as long as there have been men trying to hide their sexuality.”

George is trying to get himself back out there. He’s currently on tour for the first time in 17 years, playing in 22 North American cities to promote a twenty-five-year anniversary package. He’s also talking about a book deal with HarperCollins, said to be an autobiography deal that Michael’s manager says will be written “entirely” by the star himself.

And Michael is making his voice heard politically as well, telling fans at one of the 22-concerts in New York that Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton would be “the strongest team” for the Democratic Party, and that he knew they all “need a change.”
