Tori Amos Is Writing A Musical
In a recent interview with Out.com, Tori Amos revealed that she’s currently being commissioned by the British National Theatre to co-write a stage musical for them. Called The Light Princess, Amos says that “it will open at The National late 2009 or early 2010” in London.
The Light Princess is a fairy tale that was first published in 1864. It tells the story of a princess who becomes cursed by her evil aunt to have no gravity, making her vulnerable to floating away or being whisked away by the wind. Because of the curse she’s also unable to cry and cannot be made to see the serious side of anything. It’s believed that if she cries, the curse will be broken. Still, nothing can reach her – that is, until she falls in love with a prince.
Tori is collaborating with the playwright Samuel Adamson, who adapted All About My Mother for the stage.
“He writes the book and I’m writing the songs,” says Tori. “It’s very collaborative – he’s great to work with. He and I have been working on this, on and off, for two or three years.
Tori, not one to cut corners, says that she wants the music in the show to be truly diverse. “I felt like if I were going to do this, then I wanted there to be a representation of different styles of music, not just, ‘Well, it’s an ‘80s-themed musical,’ or, ‘It’s a takeoff on the ‘50s.’ I wanted music to span from all of the 20th century and into the 21st century. So that has taken a lot of time. It isn’t something that I’ve done as a hobby – it’s something that I’ve done for eight hours a day since I got off the road.”
Tori also revealed that while her posse of ladies have been laid to rest since the tour ended, they will feature in an upcoming DVD release.
“We filmed that… There is a lot to their life that happened off stage. It’s hard to know in life how a story chooses to end itself. All good stories have to end, but sometimes there needs to be a yearbook if you will.”
