Cyndi Lauper - A True American Leader
On an annual tour to help raise awareness about homophobia, Cyndi Lauper has said George Bush’s homophobia makes her “blood boil”.
Speaking to a journalist from the New York Times, Lauper said “the guy who saved the White House, one of the heroes who crashed that plane on 9/11, was gay – the rugby player Mark Bingham, who died on United 93, and does Bush ever mention that? That gay guy saved his lousy ass. And this guy who says he prays to god, this guy who promotes hate and fear, this guy we call our President… This guy is the true anti-American.”
The annual True Colors Tour was started by Lauper last year to raise awareness about the homophobia experienced by the GLBTI community, a community she called “my beloved community” in the interview with the Times.
Stopping at 24 cities, this year’s tour includes the Indigo Girls, Joan Jett And The Blackhearts, The B-52’s, Regina Spektor, Tegan & Sara, Colton Ford, Deborah Cox, and Sarah McLachlan. Comedians Margaret Cho, Carson Kresley, and Rosie O’Donnell are also performing.
The tour raises money for groups like PFLAG and Human Rights Campaign, and aims to raise awareness about homophobia in areas of the US where it’s most needed. Oklahoma City was a last minute addition to this year’s tour after an Oklahoma senator made a controversial speech about the “gay agenda”.
So committed to the cause is Lauper that she said she tried kissing girls. “But it didn’t feel right for me and eventually I was forced to come out as a heterosexual,” she said to the Times.
The Bingham Cup, is a world Rugby Union competition started in honour of Mark Bingham. The Cup was the subject of recent documentary Walk Like a Man, aired on ABC. This year’s Cup was won by our own Sydney Convicts.
