For Richer, For Poorer
Money talks, especially in America, and the cash is rolling in both for and against Proposition 8, the linchpin for California’s recently won gay marriage rights.
According to UK site Pinknews, those for the gay marriage ban have more than A$1.3 million in the kitty. Church group Focus On The Family have thrown over $450,000 at the campaign, the American Family Association over $568,000 and the Knights of Columbus, a national Catholic men’s organisation, has contributed over $284,000.
These enormous cash sums have meant that those fighting to hold onto their right to marry have had to really step up the fundraising efforts, and they’ve found some pretty generous people.
At a dinner in San Francisco, one man from Utah donated over $1,136,000, while a Cleveland businessman has given more than $227,000. In addition to this, gay rights groups and a co-founder of software company WordPerfect contributed a total of almost $1.5 million. The Human Rights Campaign raised more than $640,000, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, has given $227,000.
The fight for equality has become a war of wealth. These are incredible chunks of cash, it’s obvious there’s a strong push from both sides. So which way will the pendulum swing?
