Gay President Of USA Is A-OK
A new poll shows that the majority of Americans would support a gay Presidental candidate. Could the White House one day take on a shade of pink?
The poll, conducted by Zogby International, surveyed 1,089 Americans earlier this month and found that 60% would vote for a gay candidate, provided they were otherwise qualified. Two-thirds of respondents also said that a gay candidate for vice president could get their vote and nearly 70% said they would vote for a gay Senatorial candidate.
Chuck Wolfe, president of Gay and Lesbian Leadership Institute, said the results proved that most Americans wanted to be fair to gay people and was an incredible move forward.
“Our aspiration is to always see each other as individuals first, and though we may not always succeed at that, our underlying fairness and decency means that one day soon we will. This marks tremendous progress for our community and for the voting public.”
Last week the openly gay candidate for Colorado, Jared Polis, won the Democratic primary for his district, which, if he wins in November, would give him a Congressional seat and make him the first openly gay man elected to Congress.
Five openly gay or lesbian Members have served in the U.S. House of Representatives, including current Democrats Tammy Baldwin and Barney Frank. However, no openly gay or lesbian candidate has yet been elected to the U.S. Senate.
According to the The Gay & Lesbian Leadership Institute, more than 415 openly LGBT elected officials serve at every level of government throughout the United States, a ten-fold increase in just the last two decades.
