French Push For Universal Equality

French ambassador to the United Nations, Rama Yade, wants all countries to say that it’s okay to be gay, and to decriminalise homosexuality.

Speaking from a conference for non-government organisations in Paris yesterday, as French and European Union ambassador to the UN Yade says she will be proposing a draft declaration in December to universally decriminalise homosexuality.

The call for universal equality is already supported by the British government, but France currently represents all European Union states as holder of the 6-month rotational EU presidency. Yade says the draft legislation will prompt a vote from member nations.

Brazil made a surprise move to have the abuse of same-sex attracted individuals declared a human rights violation in 2004. The proposal was opposed by a group of Islamic nations.

Speaking in front of 1,700 NGO representatives, Yade said that along with decriminalising homosexuality she would also be advocating to amend violence against women worldwide.

“Homosexuality is currently illegal in 90 countries, with death the maximum penalty in six of them,” says Yade.
