Isis Wants To Be On Top
The first episode of Cycle 11 of America’s Next Top Model screened this week in the US. The show’s been generating a lot of debate this time around because of pre-op transgender contestant Isis.
When you put a bunch of competitive girls in one house, anything can happen. The last Australian series of this show was rocked by some pretty hideous bullying between the contestants, and if some of the comments made by Isis’ fellow models are anything to go by, we may just see something similar happen here.
In a piece to camera, contestant Sharaun says, “Isis is over the top. America’s Next Top Model is not going to be a drag queen. I’m sorry. It’s not.” Another contestant refers to her as a ‘man’.
In another scene two girls, Clark and Hannah, bitch about Isis while she’s swimming in the Top Model house pool. “I’m not gonna lie. It makes me uncomfortable as hell,” says Clark. “It freaks me out that she got something else different down there than me.”
“I think the thing about Isis though is like, I was like trying to convince myself I was comfortable. I can’t even comprehend I’m comfortable,” says Hannah, before adding that growing up in a small town can give you a warped view of such issues.
“Hell yeah! You walk around like that in a small town, you get shot!” replies Clark. She even goes on to defend such bigotry, saying “It’s not so much a close-minded view, it’s just more traditional.” Later in a piece to camera she says that, “Coming from a good Southern family I was really thrown back by Isis. Growing up in the South you don’t exactly run into a ‘he-she’ every day. Isis has no place in this competition.”
Not all the girls have been negative towards Isis. Contestant McKey calls her a “pretty cool chick” and says that Isis is ten times braver than she is. She also likens Isis’ gender transition to the metamorphosis of a butterfly.
