'Til Death Do Us Part' - Madonna And Guy Split
They’ve been publicly denying it for a while now but Madonna and Guy Ritchie have finally confirmed that they are getting divorced.
The pair, who married in 2000, initially wanted to wait until next year to make the announcement, however they’ve since decided that they want the paperwork done before Christmas.
It’s not the first time Madonna’s said one thing and done another. Earlier this year Madonna told People magazine, “I want to officially and for the record state… my husband and I are not planning on getting a divorce.” However, when the story was published in UK paper The Sun yesterday it detailed that both Madonna and Guy had been speaking to divorce lawyers as early as June this year.
The pair say that they want their split to be as amicable as possible, given that they have three children. Madonna’s empire has been estimated to be worth $650 million ($994,455 AUD), and media have speculated that Guy stands to gain a $120 million ($183,574 AUD) settlement if there’s no pre-nuptual agreement in place.
Madonna’s spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg issued a statement yesterday saying, “Madonna and Guy Ritchie have agreed to divorce after seven and a half years of marriage, their representatives confirmed today. They have both requested that the media maintain respect for their family at this difficult time.”
On top of her crumbling marriage come rumblings from anti-gun lobbyists who were angered by the star arriving at the New York film premiere of Filth And Wisdom, the first film she’s directed, wearing pistol shaped heels by Chanel.
According to News.com.au Dee Edwards, co-founder of the Mothers Against Murder and Aggression charity, said, “I am utterly disgusted by this. It is not fashion, it is not style, it is glorifying guns… I would like to see her walk into a mortuary or a hospital wearing those shoes to see a young child whose life has been ripped from him by guns – and then claim it as a fashion statement.”
Madonna is still travelling around the world with her Sticky And Sweet Tour.
