Comedian Ricky Gervais has responded to criticism to his book The Ricky Gervais Guide To Medicine, where he calls obese people who resort to surgery to lose weight “lazy fucking fat pigs” who should get off their arse and go for a run. Many have said that if you can’t make fun of gay people anymore, then the same should go for the overweight. Gervais disagrees.

“I heard someone on the radio once say that they were tired of the prejudice aimed at the overweight. They said something like ‘you’re not allowed to make fun of gay people, so why are you allowed to make fun of fat people? It’s the same thing.’,” blogged Gervais recently.

“It’s not the same thing though, is it? Gay people are born that way. They didn’t work at becoming gay. Fat people became fat because they would rather be that way than stop eating so much. They had to eat and eat to get fat. Then, when they were fat they had to keep up the eating to stay fat.

“For gayness to be the same as fatness, gay people would have to start off straight but then ween themselves onto cock. Soon they’re noshing all day getting gayer and gayer. They’ve had more than enough cock… they’re full… they’re just sucking for the sake of it. Now they’re overgay, and frowned upon by people who can have the occasional cock but not over indulge.”

Before you all collectively clutch your pearls, Gervais has also referred to himself as a “fucking fat bastard” in the past.

Meanwhile fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has publicly attacked the overweight recently. When asked about the use of size zero models in the fashion industry, a trend that’s been blamed for the increasing rates of eating disorders among young men and women, he said, “there are nearly 30% of young people who are too fat. So let’s take care of the zillions of the too fat before we talk about the percentage that’s left.”

I hate the whole "It's okay to make fun of the fat" thing. My inner young fat girl still finds it hard when people call out things on the street or watch me with far too much interest if I dare eat a chocolate bar or ice cream in public. Never mind I'm more active than a bunch of skinny folk and my medicals show nothing wrong me with at all. Now that I'm older I don't quite get affected as much. But once I was on a train wearing a shirt that said something about having no husband (A gay themed shirt) while some bloke starts yelling at me about that being a fact cause I'm too fat and he went into a tirade until I was openly sobbing. Not a single passenger said a goddamn thing. Making fun of fat people leads to that sort of behavior and it's not on.

Doesn't the thought occur to some of these people that if shaming and making fun of fat people actually made them lose weight, there wouldn't be a single fat person on this planet?

I've been a fatty a few times in my life and as soon as I stopped worrying about it, the weight fell off me and I "naturalised"... waiting for some more naturalisation to occur since Xmas! haha! When you lack the ability to laugh at yourself, the joke is really on you...

As far as comedy goes I'm a believer in Inside vs Outside humour. A white comic trash talking "niggers". BAD. A black comic using the word. Fine. Same with Ricky. I don't think he really counts as fat, so as far as I'm concerned can stay away from the fat teasing. That's my main issue. A truly fat comic talking about lazy pigs would probably work the material in a much more honest way. Of course there are exceptions to the rule with edgy comedy - like the Summer Heights High stuff. But Ricky is mostly likely just externalizing some self-loathing. Oh and thanks for the comments guys but I didn't mean my story to become a sob story - just more an indication of how wide spread the idea is that poking fun at fatties is acceptable, even in public.
