BBC Plays Cupid For Gay Indian Prince

Remember Indian Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil? He came out during an interview in 2006, was stripped of his title by his father and was disowned. Gohil only found out that he’d been kicked out of the family when he read an ad placed in local newspapers by the Royal Family. Nice.

A few years down the track and so much has changed. His title has been re-instated, he’s back in the good books with the family and he’s looking for true love. And like any self-respecting royal he’s doing it publicly, through the much loved medium of reality TV.

BBC is behind the show called Undercover Princes. The premise – three princes live in a terrace house together in the seaside UK city of Brighton, known for its strong gay nightlife. They are all given assumed names – Gohil is going by the name of Mani. The two other princes come from Sri Lanka and South Africa – but Gohil is the only one flying the pride flag. Together they are all on a quest to find true love.

Gohil told the BBC that by going undercover he had a much greater chance of finding a husband.

“I don’t think I could have found love in India because people who were attracted to me were more attracted by my princely fortune or princely status. I was undercover here, so it was easier — a litmus test – whether a person is genuinely in love with me.”

Gohil said that it took a while to adjust to his new life. He was without his large team of servants, the size of his bedroom in Brighton was the size of his bathroom back home, and he had never handled money before, nor had he ever been to a supermarket.

When the African prince found out Gohil was gay he didn’t take it well.

“He took out the Bible and read it to me, that it is a sin to be gay. There were issues but we sorted it out through conversations,” Gohil said to Indian paper The Hindu.

The show is now screening in the UK on BBC Three.
