Drag Queen Wins Homecoming Queen

Last Saturday 22 year old Ryan Allen proved to everyone at his college that he is The Queen, after beating two women to be named the new Homecoming Queen at George Mason University.

“It was just for fun,” said the student, who performs regularly as a drag queen in various local clubs.

Growing up in Goochland, Virginia he suffered abuse from fellow classmates after coming out during his freshman year in high school. But that’s all behind him now. He accepted the honour in a sequined top, black skirt and heels.

Allen received many warm messages from the University’s spokesman, as well as hundreds of friends and classmates.

“In the larger scheme of things, winning says so much about the university. We’re one of the most diverse campuses in the country and… we celebrate that,” said Allen.

A fellow classmate from Lebanon added, “I’ve never been into homecoming over here. This is the first time I’ve actually wanted to support someone.”

Homecoming, welcoming back of former residents and alumni, is a tradition in many universities, colleges and high schools in North America. It usually includes activities for students and alumni, such as sports and culture events and a parade through the streets of the city or town. Additionally, many smaller American Protestant congregations conduct special services called homecomings, often annually but sometimes as one-time-only events, to celebrate church heritage and welcome back former members or pastors. Homecoming is an annual tradition of the United States. People, towns, high schools and colleges come together, usually in late September or early October, to welcome back former residents and alumni. It is built around a central event, such as a banquet and, most often, a game of American football, or, on occasion, basketball, or ice hockey. When celebrated by schools, the activities vary widely. However, they usually consist of a football game played on the school's home football field, activities for students and alumni, a parade featuring the school's marching band and sports teams, and the coronation of a Homecoming Queen (and at many schools, a Homecoming King).

ok I didn't actually know all that, I thought it was to do with a home football game prior to halloween. So basically it's like 'O' week with an emphasis on seniors.
