Is the Mexican city of Guadalajara about to get its first openly gay mayor? Perhaps. 31 year old, openly gay Social Democrat Party (PSD) politician Miguel Galán has expressed interest in the position, and at the end of the month he’ll find out if his party will support him as the official candidate.
Guadalajara, Mexico’s second most populated municipality, has a reputation for being traditionalist, and the conservative National Action Party is currently in power. Galán has previously accused the current government of being anti gay, saying that the gay community are “second class citizens” in Mexico, and that the country itself is “chauvinistic”.
Galán may speak up about gay rights, and he may have opened Mexico’s first gay radio station, but he says that he has many objectives, and will be fighting for more than just gay rights.
Some have predicted that even if he is put forward by the party, they are only likely to get 3% of the vote. Galán believes that regardless of the outcome his campaign is opening doors, and showing people alternatives.
“Proposals have to be made, beyond what … candidates [do in the bedroom],” he said.
The election takes place on July 5.
