Hunky Jesus Crowned

San Fransisco’s Sisters Of Perpetual Indulgence held their annual, and often controversial, Hunky Jesus competition in Delores Park over the Easter weekend. It’s the 28th time they’ve held the pageant, which sees numerous contestants compete onstage clad in various Jesus attire.

According to The Sword, this year’s contestants included a homage to the Shroud of Turin, giant wooden crosses, rapping Jesuses, Jesuses with dogs and Spice Girls Jesuses.

There’s been debate over who actually took home the crown this year. Some sources name ‘Livestock Jesus’ as the clear winner, with his cotton shroud, rope, sheep and donkey, others say that ‘Brokeback Jesus’ was the actual winner.

The competition is run by The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, who are “devoted to community service, ministry and outreach to those on the edges, and to promoting human rights, respect for diversity and spiritual enlightenment”.

The competition has always attracted its fair share of criticism. Last year Fox News host Bill O’Reilly said that he would love to see those involved “turned into salt”, and others, even some from within the gay community, have said that the competition is disrespectful, and that it justifies homophobia from the religious right.

“We believe all people have a right to express their unique joy and beauty and we use humour and irreverent wit to expose the forces of bigotry, complacency and guilt that chain the human spirit,” says the Sisters’ mission statement.

The San Francisco Sisters have raised well over $1 million USD over the years for various charities.
