Credit Crunch Evident In UK Rich List

The Sunday Times have released their annual rich list, documenting Britain’s wealthiest people. However, this year everyone seems much more fascinated with the toll the global financial crisis has taken on stars’ fortunes.

Elton John’s fortune fell 26% in the last year, from £238 million ($A490 million) to £175 million ($A360 million), while Robbie Williams lost £25 million ($A51.5 million) – his fortune now sits around the £80 million ($A165 million) mark. Virgin boss Richard Branson is still sitting pretty at A$2.4 billion, despite losing $A3 billion last year – that’s A$350,000 an hour.

Kylie Minogue’s net worth has dropped by 10% in the last year – her current fortune sits at £34.9 million (A$71.25 million). Even the UK royal family has been hit – the Queen’s fortune has dropped by an astounding £50 million (A$101.9 million) in the last twelve months.

England’s 1,000 richest people now have a collective fortune of A$531.03 billion, compared with a record $850 billion last year. The number of billionaires has fallen from 75 to 43.
