Miss Botswana: Gays Are Unnatural

The winner of this year’s annual Miss Botswana competition, held last Saturday night, called homosexuality “an unnatural act” while answering a question from a judge during the competition.

According to Mmegi Online, when 20 year old Sumaiyah Marope was asked if she would ever be an advocate for same-sex relationships, she responded with, “It is an unnatural act… God made us men and women… It is only proper for men to have relationships with women as God created us.”

The situation is reminiscent of the recent Miss California debate, involving Perez Hilton. Reports state that the comments were met with loud approval from the crowd.

In addition to the title of Miss Botswana, Marope took home a brand new Mercedes Benz, a year’s supply of fuel from BP, as well as jewellery and money to go towards her studies. She was also given a helicopter flight around Gaborone city.

Homosexuality is illegal in Botswana for both men and women and is punishable by up to seven years imprisonment.

Marope’s comments come as Legabibo, a Botswana based gay rights organisation, takes legal action against the government, pushing for the legalisation of same sex relationships.

Legabibo’s case is being assisted by the Botswana Network of Ethics, Law and HIV and Aids (BONELA). In 2007 the Botswana government refused to allow Legabibo to register as an officially recognised organisation. A government spokesperson at the time said that to do so “would be tantamount to registering an organisation of criminals”.
