Pride Party at the White House
It seems everyone’s celebrating Pride, including US President, Barack Obama. Hosting a ‘Stonewall’ reception on Monday night, the White House event is said to be an attempt to acknowledge the contribution of gay Americans.
Announcement of the reception comes amid claims Obama has not come good on election promises to gay Americans. Possibly attempting to smooth things over with a community that has been disappointed with his lack of definitive action, Obama’s reception will celebrate the 1969 Stonewall riots and include some of the country’s leading activists and gay leaders. But some say a party won’t be enough.
“What’s going to change the way the community is feeling is seeing the introduction of a bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. We want to see a president who is fulfilling the promises he made on the campaign trail,” said Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of the Family Equality Council.
The event has not been officially announced and attendees are unsure if their concerns will be addressed by the president, or if the event will merely be a celebration.
It won’t be the first time a US president has celebrated pride, Bill Clinton declared June Pride month in 1999.
