Ellen To Host Academy Awards
It’s been announced that Ellen DeGeneres will be the host of the upcoming Academy Awards, making her the second female to host the event solo – the first being Whoopi Goldberg.
Ellen, who is currently in a relationship with ex-Australian Portia de Rossi, seems to be the perfect choice. She’s easy going, a little dry and self-deprecating and quite frankly a breath of fresh air from the last two hosts – Jon Stewart and Chris Rock, both who are known for being risky and abrasive, not necessarily the best qualities for the host of such an event.
While she has big shoes to fill, she’s more than qualified. Her daytime talk show has won 15 daytime Emmys since it began in 2003, she’s regularly talking to everyone from Bindi Irwin to Donald Trump and she hosted the Emmy’s just after September 11 and deftly managed to coax the audience through the glamorous affair in light of the carnage that was taking place around it, opening with the line – “terrorists can’t take away our creativity, our striving for excellence, our joy. Only network executives can do that.”
Ellen is thrilled to be hosting the event. In a statement she said, “When [Academy Awards Producer] Laura Ziskin called, I was thrilled. There’s two things I’ve always wanted to do in my life. One is to host the Oscars. The second is to get a call from Laura Ziskin. You can imagine that day’s diary entry.”
The Academy Awards take place in Hollywood this Sunday, Feb 25.
