San Francisco Declares 'Gay Porn Day'

You gotta love a city that is brave enough to declare a national “gay porn day”. Good old San Francisco, famous for the sourdough bread, the cable cars, the steep hills and of course, its prevalent gay scene – can now add one more feather to its colourful cap. Mayor Gavin Newsom’s office has declared February 23 to be Colt Studio Day, honoring the 40th anniversary of the San Francisco porno company that promises viewers “the hottest man-on-man action.”

Of course, not everyone’s happy about it. It’s a move that has seen San Fran lambasted in the American media, the city being referred to by one conservative as “the modern day Sodom and Gomorrah.” Reverend Sheldon, the chairman of the Traditional Values Coalition, told the Associated Press, “San Francisco has proven yet again why they remain the mocked city of the country. No other major city in the nation has gone so far as to blatantly glorify a homosexual porn producer and company.”

According to the paperwork, Colt Studios was commomorated because they had “produced movies that have entertained the gay community over the past 40 years” and they’ve contributed to the city by bringing in “hundreds of millions of dollars in business… stimulating the job market and the local economy in general.”

Although as it turns out, the proclamation may have come from the mayor’s office, but because of the administrative processes involved, it may not have been approved by him personally. The mayor’s office issues almost 2,000 proclamations annually, some addressing some pretty obscure topics. A political ally of the mayor’s said that Newsom can’t be personally responsible for every proclamation that is made under his name, and a spokesperson for the mayor himself said, “There’s just going to be a stricter review process from now on… The mayor is concerned about [this one slipping through]. And we’ve changed the policy to reflect that.”

In the meantime, who’s up for some gay porn?
