Who's Your Daddy?

Looking for a Sugar Daddy? Toy maker Mattel think they have the answer, recently announcing a new addition to the company’s Barbie Gold Label Collection, called Palm Beach Sugar Daddy Ken.

Website Entertainment Earth reports that the soon to be released doll will be “Sporting a dashing jacquard-patterned jacket with a light pink polo shirt and crisp white pants, Ken doll is ready for Palm Beach social season, sunning by the pool and a stroll with his little companion.”

“This is like one of those joke Barbies art students do in college to criticize gender roles forced on children by their toys, like Hobo Barbie and Pregnant Trailer Trash Barbie. Except this time Mattel made it. It’s official. My world is rocked,” writes a blogger on the Topless Rabbit Pop Culture website.

Along with a rather spiffy outfit, the doll is reported to come with a dog and leash, swim trunks and accessories, a doll stand, and of course a certificate of authenticity.

The Sugar Daddy Ken doll will be is intended to be accompanied by 3 different and very camp new Barbie editions that will include Palm Beach Coral Barbie, Palm Beach Caftan Barbie, and Palm Beach Swimsuit Barbie. What no toyboy?

Mattel told US news site ABC online that the doll’s name is in reference to Ken’s pet, Sugar; A white West Highland terrier that Ken leads on a pink leash that is included with the doll which is aimed at a more ‘adult’ market.

“At the end of the day, this collection is targeted toward adults,” said Mattel spokeswoman Michelle Chidoni told ABC online, “While the name of the doll does refer back to the dog, I think people are going to interpret it as they want to interpret it.”

Palm Beach Sugar Daddy Ken and his Barbie playmates are set to go one sale in April 2010.

Not like any sugar daddy I've ever seen... I mean where is the pot belly, comb over and botched up OTT plastic surgery? And where's the beautiful but crack addicted, twink toyboy accessory?

Thunderbirds meets Bold & The Beautiful? lol Barbie has forever been associated with glamour, the kitschy, the plastic: a seductress; a playful career girl; a socialite. About time Ken became a seductive, playful socialite, too. Interesting thought: wouldMattel manufacture & market a 'cougar' Barbie. A Barbra Walters-type career girl of a *mature* age hunting for fresh muscle?

When I was a kid I used to tie firecrackers to my sister's Ken doll and detonated them. Needless to say I only did that once and got a tanning from my dad. I can say that Ken exploded everywhere (like body parts). If I did that today with this doll--would it be called a hate crime? Gay bashing? Dont take me seriously on this. A bit of lite humour. XG
