Gay Spy Tells Translator All

Murder, intrigue and espionage. Well, not quite. But one German spy is in big trouble for leaking state secrets to his translator. The two were having a foreign love affair, until the spy’s wife busted the two men.

On trial in Munich, the German spy known only as Anton K. is accused of leaking secrets to his 29-year-old Macedonian lover, Murat A [both pictured right]. The pair reportedly met in 2005 when Anton was posted in the Balkan region. When the two men met in a cafe, Anton immediately asked his agency if he could employ Murat as a translator.

The German secret service, Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), who employed Anton were alerted to the affair and possible leak when Anton’s German wife told the service that she had been removed from her husband’s life insurance policy, replaced with the name of her husband’s interpreter.

Both men’s lawyers say the trial is a homophobic witch-hunt and that they did nothing wrong. So happy was BND with Anton’s progress that his posting was extended in 2007 after 2 years, until 2009. When their relationship was discovered, both men were called back to Munich and arrested.

According to the original Telegraph report Anton and Murat are now living in Stuttgart, awaiting trial.
