Police Arrest Sao Paulo Pride Bomber Suspects

Police in Sao Paulo, Brazil have arrested seven members of a Brazilian neo-Nazi group who are suspected of being behind a bombing that injured 22 people during the annual pride parade in June.

The Associated Press reports that according to the Police’s Racial Crimes and Hate Crime Unit, the four men and three women arrested are members of the “Hooligan Impact” group. They are suspected of setting off a homemade bomb inside a bar in the city’s gay district after the parade.

According to unit chief Margarette Barreto they’ll be charged with organised crime and with injuring 12 people, because only 12 of the 22 people who were injured came forward to press charges.

Police managed to track the suspects down because of a threatening email that was sent to the parade’s organiser. It led to a neo-Nazi website that had photographs of its members, and these were then compared to pictures taken near the bar that was attacked.

Police are also investigating any links to the murder of a 35-year-old man during the parade.

Sao Paulo Pride is the largest gay pride parade in the world, and numbers of attendees are estimated to be around the 3.5 million mark.
