Mexico City looks set to become the first city in Latin America to legalise gay marriage, with lawmakers passing a bill 39 to 20. Now it’s up to the city’s mayor to sign the bill into law, which he is expected to do.
BBC reports that the bill redefines marriage, changing it from “the union of a man and a woman” to “the free uniting of two people”.
While some parts of Latin America, like some cities in Argentina, Ecuador and Colombia, permit civil unions for same-sex couples, gay marriage is only available in seven countries – Canada, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as some US states – Iowa, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut and New Hampshire.
According to the Associated Press, the bill also gives gay couples the right to adopt children, apply for bank loans together, inherit wealth and be included in their spouse’s insurance policies.
