Cindy McCain Says NOH8
The wife of one of America’s most high-profile Republicans has come out in support of gay marriage, posing for a NOH8 campaign photo [above right].
Cindy McCain, wife of Arizona senator and 2008 presidential hopeful John McCain, has posed for the NOH8 campaign in support of gay marriage rights. With her mouth taped closed and the NOH8 logo printed on her cheek in the photos, Cindy reportedly approached campaign organizers herself, asking to be involved.
“For Mrs. McCain to have reached out to us to offer her support truly means a lot,” reads the campaign web site. “Aligning yourself with the platform of gay marriage as a Republican still tends to be very stigmatic, but Cindy McCain wanted to participate in the campaign to show people that party doesn’t matter – marriage equality isn’t a Republican issue any more than it is a Democratic issue.”
The unexpected support from Ms McCain follows the involvement of the couple’s daughter, Meghan, who has also been photographed for the campaign [below right]. Senator McCain has not weighed into the debate in the past, insisting it was a decision for individual states.
Since the campaign’s inception, says the NOH8 site, “we’ve often been surprised at some of the different individuals who have approached us showing their support. Few, though, have surprised us more than Cindy McCain.”
“We have a huge amount of respect for both of these women for being brave enough to make it known they support equal marriage rights for all Americans,” reads the site.
CBS reports that a Republican group withdrew funding from an event 25-year-old Meghan was due to speak at because they discovered Meghan would be the keynote speaker at a ‘Marriage Equality Week’ forum in February.
