Nepal, Asian Gay Hub?
An Indian news source reports Nepal plans to open an LGBT centre, which politicians believe will make the national a gay friendly Asian hub.
A OneIndia news report says the Nepalese government has committed to spending US$2 million on the LGBT centre. The centre will contain a theatre, workshop facility, gallery, library, cafeteria, playground, health clinic, gym as well as a swimming pool.
Nepal has made headlines in the past for having Asia’s only openly gay member of parliament and discussions about playing host to gay weddings – on Mt Everest.
“Most Asian countries don’t welcome gay visitors, so we can have the maximum benefit for the Nepal economy which is fragile after years of war,” said ‘out’ politician Sunil Babu Pant to the UK’s Daily Telegraph last month.
Of the new centre, Pant says it will accommodate up to 300 people and should be ready within three years.
“It will be useful especially for sexual minorities from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, where the conditions of the third sex are vulnerable,” says Pant.
