The Malawian couple who were sentenced to 14 years’ hard labour for being gay have ignited worldwide outrage against the small African nation’s intolerance of gays.

Steven Monjeza, 26, and Tiwonge Chimbalanga, 20, (pictured) were found guilty of “unnatural acts and gross indecency” following the couples’ arrest at their commitment ceremony last year.

Their lawyers plan to appeal the sentence, which would see them stay in jail well into their thirties.

The United States joined several other world nations, including Britain and Canada, in damning the jailing. “This case mars the human rights record of Malawi,” said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs.

“We urge Malawi and all countries to stop using sexual orientation or gender identity as the basis for arrest, detention, or execution.”

Celebrities have also voiced their horror at the human rights violation. Madonna, who famously adopted children from Malawi, was particularly damning: “I am shocked and saddened by the decision made today by the Malawian court, which sentenced two innocent men to prison,” she wrote. “As a matter of principle, I believe in equal rights for all people, no matter what their gender, race, color, religion, or sexual orientation.

“Today, Malawi took a giant step backward. The world is filled with pain and suffering; therefore, we must support our basic human right to love and be loved. I call upon the progressive men and women of Malawi – and around the world – to challenge this decision in the name of human dignity and equal rights for all.”
