You either love it or you hate it. Opinions are divided over the merits of Katy Perry’s latest video Firework, which she’s dedicated to the It Gets Better project.

The life-affirming video shows various scenes including two guys kissing and a young man fending off bullies. But the sparks emitting from Perry’s breasts are proving to be the big talking point. The singer claims the fireworks are coming from her heart, but after her sexy shenanigans in previous videos, including strapping on a tasty ‘cream bun’ bra in her California Gurls video, it’s easy to assume the sparks are busting out from elsewhere.

Perry said of the song: “People are coming back and almost adopting it as their own anthem, and it’s hard, I think, to write an anthem that’s not cheesy, and I hope that this could be something in that category.

“I hope this could be one of those things where it’s like, ‘Yeah, I want to put my fist up and feel proud and feel strong. But I also don’t want to be cheesy, it’s a fine line, and I think ‘Firework’ ... would be like the opus or my one song – if I had to pick a song to play – ‘cause it has a great beat. But it also has a fantastic message.”

She then revealed on Twitter: “I am officially dedicating my new video to #itgetsbetter, because everyone has the spark to be a FIREWORK.”

The It Gets Better project began as a response to concern over several young gay Americans who took their own lives following bullying incidents. See the It Gets Better website here.

The Firework video’s empowering theme and male kissing scene have drawn comparison with Christina Aguilera’s acclaimed 2002 video for Beautiful.
