The first lesbian couple in the world to get legally married are celebrating their tenth anniversary tomorrow.

Committed Dutch couple Helene Faasen and Anne-Marie Thus (pictured at their 2001 wedding ceremony) recently reflected on their special day a decade ago. They told the AFP: “We married for love, not politics. But of course we were aware it was an historic moment.”

On April 11, 2001, The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage. Helene and Anne-Marie were one of four same-sex couples who tied the knot at the stroke of midnight by the Mayor of Amsterdam.

The couple realized the significance. “We were lucky that others had taken up the fight and made it possible for us to get married,” says Anne-Marie.

“If other people need us now, especially in countries where it is not yet legal, we want to be there for them.”

Full same-sex marriage equality is now available in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Iceland, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, and in some states of America.
