Lady GaGa is the most recent star to go under the parody pen of Weird Al Yankovic, and it seems mother monster isn’t too impressed.
Yankovic explains the situation on his blog:
“I wrote and recorded what I thought was going to be the first single off of my new album: a parody of “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga called “Perform This Way.” But after hearing it, Lady Gaga decided not to give me permission to release the song, so… it won’t be coming out commercially anytime in the near future. Sorry.”
Weird Al Yankovic’s parodies have always fallen under what the courts consider fair use, which meant he could legally record and release them without permission from the original artists. Even though this might be the case with GaGa’s tune, it has been his policy to get the consent of the original artist before including the parody on an album.
So what happens when he is told ‘no’? He uploads it to YouTube and has this to say:
“Of course I will respect Gaga’s wishes. However, given the circumstances, I have no problem with allowing people to hear it online, because I also have a personal policy not to completely waste my stinking time.”
Sounds like someone is a little ticked. I don’t know about you, but I thought the parody was hilarious. I guess Mother Monster can’t handle a joke. Or it may simply be because she’s annoyed that Yankovic thought of the ‘bee suit’ first.
