Everyone’s favourite cackling nanny Fran Drescher says she’s thrilled to announce she’s officiating a same-sex wedding in New York this week.
She held a contest as part of promotions for her newest comedy Happily Divorced – in which she plays a divorcee whose husband came out as gay – but says she’s taking her role in the nuptials seriously.
“I’m just so happy I can leverage my celebrity to help bring focus to marriage equality for all,” she tells the Huffington Post.
“The heart has reasons that reason does not know,” she adds. “When Cupid’s arrow strikes (whether it’s opposite-sex couples, racially mixed couples, or same-sex couples), it’s a feeling that can’t be denied. Love in all its diversity is a part of the human experience.”
Drescher now splits her time between California, where marriage equality is still before the courts, and New York, where it’s legal.
Fran’s role in her new TV comedy mimics her true-life experiences. The actress’s ex-husband Peter came out as gay.
