Following research suggesting that local gay men and lesbians are more likely to smoke cigarettes than the general population, California’s Health Department are targeting gays with their ‘no butts’ campaign.
This billboard has been seen on Californian highways near frequented gay bars around West Hollywood, as some health campaigners are reminding fag-loving guys that smoking can also cause erectile dysfunction.
The ‘1-800-NO-BUTTS’ number connects to a free statewide quit smoking service which provides over-the-phone counseling and referrals to local quitting programs.
Studies have shown that gays and lesbians are more likely to view smoking as acceptable at their events, and use cigarettes as a coping mechanism during tough times.
Here in Australia, smoking has been banned from bars and clubs since 2007, but most LGBT hotspots have a busy and social smoking area.
Health officials say smoking-related illnesses kill more people in Australia than the total number killed by drink, drugs, murder, suicide, road crashes, rail crashes, air crashes, poisoning, drowning, fires, falls, lightning, electrocution, snakes, spiders and sharks.
Approximately 30% of Aussie men and 27% of local women are regular smokers.
