One of the highest profile opponents of marriage equality in the United States is an ‘80s TV sitcom star. That’s the best they can get.
Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron prompted ridicule when he called homosexuality “unnatural, detrimental and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilisation” on Piers Morgan’s TV interview show recently. Catch up here.
But Cameron’s not quitting – in the latest video from conservative Christian group the National Organisation of Marriage he’s vocal about marriage being between a man and a woman and says that definition needs to be defended.
The lobby group has been upset lately over several massive US-based companies throwing their support behind marriage equality, including Starbucks, which it’s encouraging its followers to boycott (that’s not going too well so far) and cereal company General Mills.
The organisation is pretty good at social media – it has over 23,000 fans on Facebook – but overnight, this rainbow-coloured turkey proved it could gobble up more followers.
See Kirk Cameron’s stand for traditional marriage below. We’d never heard of those films he’s been in since Growing Pains. The ending suggests those who stand up against marriage equality may face “threats to their person, property or livelihood” as emotions run high on this issue, but still encourages viewers to “fight for marriage.”
It’s great to see so many people standing up to say they value marriage and family. But as a few YouTubers have pointed out, everything Cameron says about traditional marriages can be applied to gay marriages. Because our relationships and families deserve the same respect and rights as any others.
