As the controversy surrounding the anti-gay activities of American fast food company Chick-fil-A intensifies, a much-loved puppet creature company has spoken out to distance itself from the troublesome chicken chain.

Word got around that Chick-fil-A has given millons of dollars to anti-gay groups, including Marriage & Family Foundation and the Family Research Council, which campaign against marriage equality and adoption of children by same-sex couples. Then the company’s CEO Dan Cathy confirmed its anti-equal marriage stance: “Well, guilty as charged,” he announced. Catch up on the story here.

Now the Jim Henson Company, which supplies its toy brands to the kid-friendly food company, says it will longer work with Chick-fil-A.

“The Jim Henson Company has celebrated and embraced diversity and inclusiveness for over fifty years and we have notified Chick-Fil-A that we do not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors,” it said in a statement. “Lisa Henson, our CEO is personally a strong supporter of gay marriage and has directed us to donate the payment we received from Chick-Fil-A to GLAAD [the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation].”

In recent days as the Jim Henson Company deal broke down, signs have been spotted in Chick-fil-A stores giving a muddled reason for the absence of muppet merchandise…

Boston mayor Thomas Menino has also made a spectacular chicken chain blocking promise – that he’ll ensure no further Chick-fil-A outlets can open in his city. “You can’t have a business in the city of Boston that discriminates against a population,” he explained. “We’re an open city, we’re a city that’s at the forefront of inclusion.”

And the muppets aren’t the only furry characters rejecting the widespread chicken chain – check out this cheeky chap, encouraging American to tell Chick-fil-A to “cluck off”!
